Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is an incredibly expansive game, following your clan across human evolution. This is a deep and intense Survival Simulator, the apes didn't get tutorials how to smash the right two rocks together to make a sharper rock, to beat on a stick to make a spear, so neither do you. 0:00 / 11:37 Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey :: GamingDose Review GamingDose 337K subscribers Join Subscribe 2. Losing an entire clan is the toughest part of this game, as it causes you to have to start all the way over (from any starting area you've unlocked) Having to re-learn everything can get frustrating at times, as the game gives you no direction whatsoever. Once you hit certain points on the tree, you progress time forward. As your apes learn, they gain neural energy, used to build the neurons in the skill tree. The further you manage to travel from the first destination you unlock new starting areas. This is the one true joy I had during my evolutionary path, the exploration. The game lacks some important features too. The world is massive and beautifully rendered. As it stands, the game is more than fun and sure to offer you a fantastic time. You will figure out how to make sticks, bash open coconuts, and everything else that brought us forward towards the technology we have today. Your job in Ancestors is for your clan to survive 3 million years! You do this by evolution. Once this excitement is over, you begin your journey through time. Once you find a safe hiding spot, you're then moved to another ape, an adult, from your tribe and are tasked with the job of finding the lost baby. You're in a dark jungle, in the rain, with hallucinatory faces of evil emerging from nowhere (which happens when your ape is terrified). You start the game as a baby ape, scared and left alone from a predator's attack. Every time a predator lunges at you it triggers a drawn-out, slow-motion effect that breaks any sense of danger or tension, and actually makes it hard to react. It's not that the fact that there are predators is unreasonable, but the gameplay mechanic put in place when you face one is rage-quit levels of vexing. Still, that strange theatrical interruption is preferable to dealing with them yourself. You’ll need to try to take your small clan of apes through 10 million years of evolution. There's so many, that a lot of the time you won't have even spotted them before they turn on each other - one big cat clawing at another in a cutscene - and you're awarded with an achievement for making it happen. Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey has some fascinating ideas in it. Warthogs, snakes, crocodiles, big cats, eagles, are literally tripping over each other. When you're not worrying about whether or not that python egg is going to give you a dicky tummy, you're probably being eaten. (Image credit: Panache) Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! This is all done with an admittedly beautiful skill tree modelled after a brain. As new neurons mature you can evolve them, unlocking new skills, like walking on two legs, or dodging enemy attacks, or communicating with your clan. Quickly though, with every action - moving around, grooming a friend, inspecting a handful of berries - you're maturing different parts of your brain. It's easier said than done, at the beginning your hominids are so basic they're still getting around on all fours and can't even carry more than one object at a time. It's a giant sandbox, and the only goal is to keep your clan going for as many generations as possible. ![]() You'll get icons to show when you're bleeding, or poisoned, or have broken bones, but there's no map, no quests to tick off. 12/10 and if I could afford it I would invest thousands into the sequel / postponed trilogy. ![]() ![]() You're not going to get some great philosophical narrative or any tutorials beyond the basics, and the UI is minimal. This is not a game for casual players, or for people who are not patient and expect everything handed to them love this game. Bar a few early prompts to get you started, the game is very hands-off. ![]()
